Manínska tiesňava, located just a stone's throw from Považská Bystrica or Žilina, is an ideal destination for weekend hikers, families with children, and passionate photographers.
The narrowest canyon in Slovakia
Manínska tiesňava (Manín Gorge) prides itself on the title of the narrowest rock canyon with a built road in Slovakia (and according to many sources, in Central Europe as well). At its narrowest points, the width of the gorge is so small that only one car can pass through it.
This unique natural formation was shaped over thousands of years by the inconspicuous Manínsky potok (Manín Stream). Through its persistent work, it literally cut through the limestone cliff and divided it into two mighty peaks – Veľký and Malý Manín. Today, steep rock walls tower here, reaching heights of up to 400 metres in places.
Unique microclimate and nature
Thanks to the narrow space and high walls, only a minimum of sunlight reaches the bottom of the gorge. This creates a specific microclimate typical of temperature inversion. What does that mean in practice? While on the sun-drenched rocky peaks you will find heat-loving plants and animals, on the cold and damp bottom of the gorge, mountain and alpine species thrive that normally occur at much higher altitudes.
Due to its rich fauna and flora, the area has been declared a National Nature Reserve since 1967.
-
Rare flora: During the flowering season, you can admire plants such as the Alpine aster, the bare primrose, the middle pasqueflower, or the true early carnation. In shady crevices grow bryophytes and ferns, including the rare hart's-tongue fern and the striking moonwort.
-
Manín endemic: The true jewel of the gorge is the mountain plant Manín hard helmetbell. It is an exceptional subspecies that was described directly from this locality and is considered its unique feature.
Hiking suitable for everyone
One of the greatest advantages of the Manínska tiesňava gorge is its excellent accessibility.
-
For families with children and strollers: An asphalt road runs through the entire gorge. The walk is flat, easy, and even the youngest hikers, seniors, or visitors with a child stroller will manage it without any problems.
-
Educational trail: You can make your walk more interesting by reading the information boards of the Manínska tiesňava Educational Trail, which will familiarize you with the geological development, history, and natural wealth of this place.
-
Connection with Kostolecká Gorge: If you feel like a longer trip, continue along the asphalt road further through the village of Záskalie all the way to the neighboring Kostolecká Gorge. There another unique sight awaits you – the largest rock overhang in Slovakia, called the Roof of Slovakia, and a picturesque wooden school.

Practical information for visitors
-
Transport and parking: The easiest way to reach the gorge is by car from Považská Bystrica (in the direction of Považská Teplá). Smaller free parking areas are located just before the entrance to the gorge or near the local campsite. Regular suburban bus service is also available.
-
Admission: Entry to the national nature reserve is free of charge year-round.
-
Safety: Since a narrow asphalt road runs through the gorge and serves as the only access road for the villages of Záskalie and Kostolec, extra caution is needed around passing cars (especially in blind bends).
-
When to visit: The gorge is beautiful in every season. In summer it offers pleasant cooling, while in autumn it abounds with the colors of mixed forests. In winter, when snow covers the rocks and the stream freezes, it turns into a true ice kingdom.
For the more demanding: Ascent to Veľký Manín
If a leisurely stroll along the flat bottom of the canyon isn't enough for you, the area also offers a full-fledged mountain experience. Manínska tiesňava is a great starting point for the ascent to Veľký Manín (891 m above sea level), which is the highest peak of the entire Súľov Mountains.

-
Difficulty and route: Unlike a walk through the gorge, the ascent to Veľký Manín is a moderately difficult hike with a steep climb that requires at least basic fitness and sturdy hiking footwear. The most common starting points for the summit are the village of Záskalie (following the yellow hiking trail) or Považská Teplá.
-
What awaits you at the summit: The highest point of Veľký Manín itself is forested and does not offer a direct view. However, you don't have to be disappointed – the best is yet to come along the way.
-
Panoramic views: Just below the summit and along the ridge there are fantastic rocky viewpoints (the most famous being the Northern Viewpoint). From these deforested ledges you will be treated to breathtaking views of Považská Bystrica, the winding Váh river, Malý Manín and deep into the gorge itself. These spots are especially popular among photographers during autumn temperature inversions.
A paradise for climbers: Skala nad lúkou sector
Manínska tiesňava is not only for hikers, but also represents an important location for climbers. Directly on Veľký Manín there is the climbing area Manínska úžina, in which there is a popular sector called Skala nad lúkou. Climbing activity is permitted in this sector year-round, but it is governed by strict rules:
-
Climbing is only valid on the basis of an exemption for members of organizations such as SHS JAMES, for foreign organized climbers, and staff of the State Nature Conservancy or members of the Nature Guard may also present it.
-
When top-rope climbing (so-called top-rope), it is essential to clip the rope into your own carabiners to extend the lifespan of the fixed anchor points (belay stations).
-
Bivouacking, camping or bivouacking is strictly prohibited throughout the entire area.
-
Any observed nesting of birds in the rocks must be immediately reported by climbers to the area manager or the Administration of the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area.
-
It goes without saying that all your waste must be taken away.
