Podšíp settlement: A lost fairy tale of Liptov where time stood still

This enchanting mountain settlement, hidden high above the confluence of the Orava and Váh rivers directly beneath the majestic peak of Šíp, is a true step back in time. Although the last permanent residents left it in the 1950s, thanks to enthusiasts its original wooden cottages still stand today and form one of the most photogenic places in Slovakia.

It is located near the village of Stankovany and the National Nature Reserve - Šíp, whose territory is notable for its preserved vegetation zonation, rare plant species, and protected animals. The original rural area of Podšíp has preserved its landscape and architectural character to the present day, and due to its social significance, it is included in a monument zone.

It is named after the hereditary reeve Stanko. The settlements of Podšíp and Fedorov were probably established through resettlement during the Turkish raids. Available sources state that the settlement of Podšíp is mentioned in 1808, as is the settlement of Fedorov, which is also located near the village of Stankovany.

According to historical records, the settlement had six houses and thirty-eight inhabitants in 1828. The surrounding areas and villages belonged to the castle estate of Likava and their cultural character was strongly influenced by plant and animal production. Peasant farming determined the functional shapes of houses and farm buildings. In the vicinity of Stankovany, sheep farming, fishing, and timber preparation for sawmills were widespread. Crafts such as basketry, weaving, and rafting were developed.

Hemp cultivation was widespread, used for making clothing. The Podšíp settlement was intensively used for timber extraction, mowing, and grazing until the 1970s. Due to its geographical location, it was not damaged in the past by natural disasters or fires that affected some surrounding settlements in the last century (in the village of Stankovany, a fire in 1950 destroyed about fifty houses). The settlement was inhabited by eight to ten households. In a small residential building with one room and a kitchen, as many as eleven people were crowded.

If you decide to visit this place where time has stood still, you have the choice of an easier route along the blue trail with a gentle ascent from Stankovany around the Močiar nature reserve (it can also be managed on a mountain bike), or a shorter route along the green trail , which however demands its toll with a steeper ascent.

Finally, after just under an hour, as if by a miracle, the first settler cottages appear with a vast meadow and a view of the distant Rozsutec and Stoh.

Renovations using traditional methods: The current owners and volunteers who care for the wooden houses renovate them with great respect for history. Only original and traditional woodworking techniques are used.

Unique heritage zone: Since 1991, this place has been declared a heritage zone. There are approximately 10 to 16 original wooden houses that have been saved. Today they no longer serve as permanent residences but have passed into the hands of cottage owners and tourism enthusiasts.

Transport and access

1. From Stankovany (most popular route)

This is the fastest and most common access, ideal for a family trip.

Route: From the railway station in Stankovany along the yellow tourist trail.
Time: Approximately 45 – 60 minutes.
Character: The path leads first through a meadow and then through a forest with a gentle ascent. It is a relatively easy route that even children can manage.

2. From Žaškov (from the Orava side)

If you are coming from Orava, this is your starting point.

Route: From the village of Žaškov along the yellow tourist trail.
Čas: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

3. Circuit via the top of Šíp

For more experienced hikers, we recommend combining a visit to the settlement with an ascent to the very peak of Šíp (1,170 m above sea level).

Character: More challenging hike with significant elevation gain, but the reward is beautiful rock formations and panoramic views of the confluence of the Váh and Orava rivers.

Important information

Parking: In Stankovany you can park at the municipal office or near the railway station.
Water: Directly in the settlement of Podšíp there is an improved water spring, where you can refresh yourself.
Warning: The settlement is private property (cottagers spend their free time here), so please respect their privacy, peace, and do not litter.

Tip: If you enjoy photography, the most beautiful light on the wooden houses falls in the morning hours, when the peaks of Šíp in the background are nicely illuminated.
