Starhrad

Starhrad played a strategic role in the past due to its location. It controlled an important ford across the Váh River in the Strečno Gorge. It was an important passage from the upper Považie region towards Turiec and Liptov. It also served as a toll station. The first written mention dates back to 1323, but it is indirectly mentioned as early as 1235.

At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, the main Považie road led along the right bank of the Váh and Budatín. This later changed, and the road was relocated to the other side of the Váh. At that time, the new Strečno Castle was built and gradually took over the function of Varín Castle, which appears in documents under the name Old Castle.

Tourist attractions in the area

The area is significantly rich in tourist attractions. In addition to Starý hrad, there is also Strečno Castle from a later period, which is in a better state of preservation, has a permanent exhibition, and hosts various cultural events. On the way to Starhrad, we will also get views of Strečno Castle and the Váh River, which in these parts, thanks to its preserved state without human intervention, is home to our largest salmonid fish – Danube salmon (some individuals can grow up to 1 m in length).

We will also see the Monument to French Partisans. The Strečno Gorge was, due to its strategic importance, the scene of significant partisan activity during World War II. Partisans from the Strečno area had been carrying out activities for several days before August 29, 1944, which directly influenced the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising. On the way to the castle, we can also see the flooded quarry Nezbud, which was historically the only quarry in Europe for extracting natural asphalt.

On the other side of the river, which can be crossed on foot via a pedestrian bridge or by car ferry, you can visit the Špičák lookout tower after a short climb. A little above the castle, we can enjoy a view of the famous Domašínsky meander. If we wish to go even further, a tourist trail leads from Starhrad to Chata pod Suchým, which offers accommodation and dining in the heart of nature. Many restaurants in the village of Nezbudská Lúčka, through which we will pass, also offer accommodation, dining, and space for children.

Access and transport

1. By Train (Most Practical Choice)

Stop: Get off at the station Nezbudská Lúčka – Strečno.
Route: From the station, head towards the village of Nezbudská Lúčka. Follow the red tourist trail, which will lead you through the village, under the railway bridges, and further along the Váh river.
Time: On foot from the station to the castle takes approximately 45 – 60 minutes of easy walking.

2. By Car

Option A (Parking in Strečno): Park at the main paid parking lot below Strečno Castle. Then walk across the footbridge over the Váh River to Nezbudská Lúčka and join the red trail.
Option B (Parking in Nezbudská Lúčka): You can reach the village either by a detour through Žilina and Varín, or you can use the Strečno ferry, which also transports cars. You can park at smaller parking lots in the village or at its end (at the no-entry sign), which shortens your walking route to about 30 minutes.

3. By bus

Use suburban connections to the village Strečno (stop Strečno, pri lávke or Strečno, Jednota). From the stop, cross the footbridge to Nezbudská Lúčka and continue along the red trail.

4. By bicycle

A popular cycling route leads to the castle from Nezbudská Lúčka along the Váh River. The path is mostly flat and paved, only the final short climb directly to the ruins is steep and rocky (better suited for pushing the bike).

Description of the route to the castle

From Nezbudská Lúčka you walk on level ground along the Váh River (still on the red trail).
On the left side you will have the river, on the right a forest and a cottage area.
The road will lead you to a gazebo with a fireplace and an information board.
Shortly after it, there is a steeper turn to the right uphill. This is the only steeper section, which takes about 15 minutes and leads you directly to the castle grounds.

Practical tips:

Admission: The castle is freely accessible year-round and there is no entrance fee.
Terrain: The route is easy and suitable for families with children. However, we recommend sturdy footwear, as the terrain within the ruins is uneven.
View: The best view of the Váh meander is not directly from the courtyard, but from the viewpoint a bit below the castle tower.

The Legend of Margita and Besná: The Secret of the Wild Waves of the Váh

Once upon a time, in a deep and beautiful valley below Strečno Castle, the untamed Váh River meandered. In those times, when brave raftsmen still floated on it, there lived in a small cottage near the bank a beautiful, kind-hearted girl named Margita. She lived with her stepmother, whom the locals, because of her evil and hot-tempered nature, called nothing else butBesná.

Love and Cruel Jealousy

Despite her nature, Besná was still a beautiful woman who longed for love and admiration. Her eyes fell on a handsome young man from the village, but fate had other plans. When the young man knocked on their door, he did not come for the stepmother. His heart was won by the kind and modest Margita, whom he asked for her hand in marriage.

Envy flared up in the stepmother's heart like a devastating flame. She could not bear the thought that the young and handsome man had rejected her for her own stepdaughter. One dark, foggy morning, she lured the unsuspecting Margita onto the steep cliffs towering high above the wild rapids of the Váh River. At the moment when the girl gazed into the roaring water, the stepmother, in a fit of insane jealousy, pushed her into the depths.

The Curse of Conscience

The river forever swallowed the quiet girl. However, the crime did not go unpunished. Remorse began to haunt the furious woman. In every rustle of the wind and every crash of the waves, she heard Margita's desperate crying. In the end, she went completely mad from the remorse. She ran along the banks of the Váh, until in a frenzy she jumped into the raging river at exactly the same place where she had previously ended the life of her stepdaughter.
