Lietava Castle

Lietava Castle

Lietava Castle is located 10 km from Žilina on the edge of the Súľov Mountains. With its area (1 hectare), it ranks among the largest and most beautiful preserved ruins in Central Europe. Since 1999, the Association for the Rescue of Lietava Castlehas been taking care of its rescue and sensitive restoration. The castle is freely accessible all year round, and in part of the middle castle you will find an exhibition of archaeological finds and history.

History of the Castle

The castle was founded in the 13th century, probably by the Balaš family. Later it was taken over by Matúš Čák of Trenčín, after which it returned to royal hands and the family ownership of the Balaš family. Significant modifications were carried out at the end of the 15th century by Pavol Kiniži, who strengthened the fortifications.

The castle experienced its greatest flourishing in the 16th century under František Turzo, who rebuilt the castle in the Renaissance style with typical arched attics. After 1641, when the castle ceased to be used, it gradually fell into disrepair.

Cultural events

Various events take place at the castle, such as Open Doors Day or the popular Haunted Castle. More information can be found at www.hradlietava.sk.
