This peak is rich in history and a useful source of limestone extraction, as well as a popular destination for cyclists and hikers. It is particularly appealing for its views, which open up a panorama of the entire city of Žilina. You can set out from Strečno along a path that leads directly past the castle, or from the village of Stráňavy. Alternatively, there is an interesting route from the village of Višňové to the peak of Minčol and then on to Polom.
I chose a tourist-marked trail from the village of Stráňavy, along which a newly built asphalt road leads directly to Polom. It is therefore ideal for cyclists, but also for hikers. However, you need to be careful, especially if you are accompanying children, because many cyclists ride back down the road quite fast. As the return route, I chose a descent towards Strečno and Nezbudská Lúčka, where I boarded the train.

Significant site of liberation battles
The battles of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps with the help of partisan groups and the capture of Polom on April 22, 1945, were the culmination of the hardest fighting of the Malá Fatra operation. The enemy lost the dominant position of their defense on the peaks of Malá Fatra shortly before the end of World War II.
Mining activity
Mining activity at the Polom open-pit quarry began in 1925. It created job opportunities and, at the time of the approaching global economic crisis, was a significant economic contribution. From 1976, limestone was transported by a cable belt conveyor for lime production in the village of Varín.

Access and transport
1. Transport
- By bus (SAD): A bus line runs from Žilina towards Stráňavy. Get off at the stop Stráňavy, Pod Polom.
- By car: Road I/18 towards Martin, in Stráňavy turn off and continue to the end of the village. You can park in the village or at the former forester's lodge (near the barrier), where there is also a small museum.
- By train: The nearest station is Strečno (Nezbudská Lúčka).
2. Access Routes
- From Stráňavy (green trail): The fastest route along an asphalt/forest road. Time: approx. 2 hours on foot, elevation gain 500 m. Also suitable for mountain bikes.
- From Strečno (Yellow + Blue trail): Via Špicák lookout tower, Sedlo pod Kojšovou and Sedlo Javorina. Time: approx. 2.5 – 3 hours.
- From Višňové: The route leads through meadows and forests, later you will join the green trail from Stráňavy.
3. Important Information
- Monument and views: The monumental monument is located at the summit. However, the most beautiful views of Žilina and Malá Fatra are at the limestone quarry.
- Mining: Active mining is taking place in the immediate vicinity. Respect the prohibitions on entering the quarry areas!
It doesn't matter whether you put on hiking boots or get on a bike saddle. Polom Hill is a place where respect for history perfectly blends with the beauty of Fatra nature. Follow in the footsteps of heroes and reward yourself with a view you won't forget!
