1. Start: Žilina Water Reservoir
The trip can start right at the Žilina Waterworks, from where we will continue along the built cycle path to Teplička nad Váhom. The cycle route will take us in a circuit through villages and meadows behind the hill Straník, which is known to probably every resident of Žilina.
2. Stop at Straník Hill
From Teplička nad Váhom, we will conquer Straník Hill along the asphalt path, which will encourage us with optimism from its views of the mountain ranges and the whole of Žilina.
3. Chapel above Kotrčina Lúčka
Our next stop will be the chapel above Kotrčina Lúčka, which serves as a kind of border with the villages of Horný Vadičov and Dolný Vadičov.
4. Ride through meadows and forest to the village of Gbeľany
This passage is very impressive with its views of Malá Fatra, although sometimes, especially when it rains, it can be slightly challenging because the field road has many deep ruts from tractors, where water and mud tend to accumulate. So let's take the weather into account as well.
5. Final relaxing ride around the dam
At the end, from the village of Gbeľany, we will move onto the cycle path along the Žilina Waterworks, which is a pleasant relaxing finish to conclude with.

What awaits you at the top?
- Panoramic views: In favorable weather, you have the entire Žilina Basin, the Žilina Waterworks, as well as the peaks of the Malá Fatra (Krivánska and Lúčanská parts), Súľov Mountains, and Kysucká Highlands at your fingertips.
- Mecca of non-motorized flying: Straník is a legend among Slovak paragliders and hang glider pilots. Watching dozens of colorful canopies gliding over the city is an experience in itself.
- Award-winning architecture: At the top, there is a unique wooden walkway with a viewing shelter.
- A piece of history: The site also has a rich past – in the Late Bronze Age, there was a significant hillfort of the Lusatian culture here.
How to get there?
The hill is easily accessible, and even families with children or less experienced hikers can manage it:
- Public transport and car: You can drive by car or take Žilina's public transport (line no. 27) directly to the Zástranie district.
- Hiking trail: From the church in Zástranie, a yellow hiking trail leads to the summit. It is an easy walk up a gentle hill, which will take you approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

The route directly from Žilina to Jánošík's region will offer you everything you expect from a perfect trip. A safe asphalt path away from busy traffic, a refreshing ride along the Váh river, and breathtaking views of the majestic peaks of Malá Fatra await you.
What awaits you on the route: From the water to the mountain peaks
1. Start at the Žilina Water Works
The trip usually starts at the Žilina Waterworks. Right at the beginning, you will be greeted by a pleasant recreational atmosphere. You can watch sailboats, paddleboarders, or flocks of swans and ducks. The smooth asphalt path will lead you along the water's edge with views of the surrounding hills, which is ideal for warming up your muscles.
2. Confluence of the Váh and Varínka rivers and the "flying" Straník
As you approach the village of Varín, the route will take you around the confluence of the Váh and Varínka rivers. If you look at the Straník hill rising above Žilina, on sunny days you will almost certainly see dozens of colorful parachutes. Straník is, after all, the mecca of Slovak paragliding, and the sight of circling pilots completes a great scenery.
3. The refreshing company of the Varínka River
A significant part of the cycle route follows the flow of the mountain river Varínka. Thanks to this, the ride is pleasantly cool even during hot summer days. Crystal-clear water, gurgling cascades, and picturesque nooks with wooden footbridges are ideal spots for short stops, a picnic, or at least dipping your feet in the refreshing water.
4. Safe riding through picturesque villages
Nová cyklotrasa je pýchou regiónu, pretože je z veľkej časti segregovaná – oddelená od hlavnej automobilovej dopravy. Prejdete cez katastre obcí ako Krasňany, Stráža či Belá. Cestou uvidíte tradičnú aj modernú vidiecku architektúru, pasúce sa ovečky na okolitých lúkach a lavičky pripravené na oddych.
5. Fun and relaxation at Camping Belá
Before the gates of Terchová you will pass the famous Autocamping Belá - Nižné Kamence. It is a perfect strategic point for a break, especially if you are going with children. There is a mini zoo with animals, children's playgrounds and refreshment stands where you can replenish fluids (for example, with draught Kofola) and energy before the final climb.
6. Panorama of Malá Fatra and arrival at Jánošík
As you approach Terchová, the best part begins to unfold before you. Right from your bike, you'll have an exclusive view of the rocky ridges of Malá Fatra – the dominant Malý and Veľký Rozsutec or the Sokolie massif. At the very destination in Terchová, watching over you from the hill is the majestic stainless steel statue of Juraj Jánošík.
Warning: The cycle route connecting Žilina with Terchová is a beautiful and popular route, but to ensure a smooth and safe ride, we would like to draw your attention to the following important situations you will encounter on the road:
- Safety bollards in the cycle lane: On several sections, especially at the entrances to wooden bridges and at crossings, bollards are placed directly in the middle of the cycle path. Be particularly cautious, especially if you are riding in a group or closely behind another cyclist, so that you have enough time to react and safely pass the obstacle.
- Sharp and blind bends: The route follows the terrain and contains several sharp bends. In these sections, it is essential to slow down significantly and increase attention. Blind spots may hide cyclists coming in the opposite direction or pedestrians, so always adjust your speed so that you can stop safely in time.
- Crossing a road: At the turn-off to Lysica, the cycle route briefly crosses a road, directly through a blind section over the bridge into the village of Lysica.
- Final section of the route to Terchová: It crosses the main road for cars, but it can be bypassed to avoid traffic.
Ride sensibly, adapt your speed to the surroundings, and enjoy a beautiful and safe ride all the way to Terchová!
Final tips: The round trip is almost 50 km (it takes approximately 3 to 5 hours). If you decide after arriving in Terchová that the way back will be too demanding for you, during the summer season, bike buses also operate, which can take you and your bikes back to Žilina.
- Culinary experience: The trip would not be complete without a visit to one of the local cottages. Authentic Terchová bryndza dumplings with bacon or homemade pierogi are the perfect reward for the calories burned.
- Cultural interlude: If you have time left, get off your bike and see the unique wooden mechanical Nativity scene in the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius in the center of the village.
- Statue of Juraj Jánošík: A monumental statue of the legendary outlaw, towering on a hill directly above the village. From there, there is a beautiful view of the surroundings.
- Terchovské srdce lookout tower: If you still have some energy for a short hike, this lookout tower will give you the best view of the whole of Terchová.
- Juraj Jánošík Museum: If you are interested in history and folklore, be sure not to miss this museum right in the center.
- The cycling route is marked with signs that will guide you the whole way so you don't lose your direction.

Jewel at the confluence of Kysuca and Váh: Discover the charm of Budatín Castle
Are you looking for a place where fascinating history meets a peaceful oasis of greenery just a stone's throw from the bustling center of Žilina? Budatín Castle is one of the most beautiful historical landmarks of northern Slovakia, and a visit to it should definitely not be missing from your plans.
Once a mighty water fortress from the 13th century, today an elegant seat of the Považie Museum, it will charm you at first sight with its iconic observation tower. From its top, you will have a unique view of the confluence of two rivers and the panorama of the surrounding mountains. The castle, however, hides a true world unique – the largest tinker's exhibition in the world, which pays tribute to the incredible skill of Slovak masters and takes you back to the times when our tinkers conquered the world.
After the museum tour, a spacious English park with centuries-old trees and majestic plane trees welcomes you. It is an ideal place for a Sunday picnic, a romantic walk, or sitting with coffee overlooking the historic walls.
Just a short distance from the bustling Strečno lies a place where raw industrial history has merged with wild nature. The flooded quarry in Nezbudská Lúčka is one of Slovakia's true rarities – in the past, it was one of the last European sites of natural asphalt, and today its steep rock walls embrace a dark, magical water surface.
Žilina is a relatively busy city and forms the transport hub of the north. But if we want to get away from the daily rush for a while, this place is perfect for peaceful wandering in nature and recharging our batteries. An asphalt path runs through the surrounding fields, making this place suitable for easy hiking and cycling. The Lietava Castle will emerge from the rolling fields. It is not unusual for a Eurasian Sparrowhawk or a Common Buzzard to flap its wings above our heads. The Eurasian Jay is also a frequent visitor. It likes to look for food in the surrounding fields, which are well suited for growing crops and cattle breeding, which will accompany us on our journey. This impressive place is a kind of crossroads, and it is up to us whether we set off by bike towards Lietava Castle or over the hill to Lietavská Závadka, where it is only a short distance to the attractive Súľov Rocks, or we take our four-legged friend on a trip. Lietavský hrad. Nie je nič nezvyčajné, keď nad našimi hlavami bude trepotať krídlami Sokol myšiar ale aj Myšiak hôrny. Častým návštevníkom je aj Sojka obyčajná. Rada hľadá potravu na okolitých poliach, ktoré dobre slúžia na pestovanie a chov dobytka ktorý nás bude počas našej cesty sprevádzať. Toto pôsobivé miesto je takou križovatkou a je len na nás či sa vyberieme na bicykli smerom k Lietavskému hradu alebo cez kopec do Lietavskej Závadky, kde je to len kúsok k atraktívnym Súľovským skalám prípadne vezmeme svojho štvornohého kamaráta na výlet.

The forest park is a relatively densely wooded recreational zone in Žilina interwoven with an asphalt path and trails, benches, fire pits, or climbing frames for sports activities. The center is a children's playground with a café, where there is also a chapel built in memory of those fallen in the First World War.
The viewpoint in the forest park is a popular stop with a view of the village of Rosina, the surrounding fields, and the Lučanská Fatra and Malá Fatra mountains. A tree-lined avenue leads to it, opening at its end like a gate to the wide surroundings. There are benches for resting and birdhouses in the tree growth, where various species of birds and squirrels take turns.

We don't always have enough time to visit places that are farther from our home. After a workday, we don't have much time left, but we can always choose a place nearby that is interesting and also allows us to get important exercise for our health and recharge our energy after a demanding day. One such place is located just outside Žilina above the village of Rosina. It is suitable for hikers as well as for bicycles, and your four-legged friends will also thank you if you bring them along. A great added value of this place is the wide view of the surroundings, which we feel as an inner sense of freedom and relaxation. Views of the city of Žilina, Lietava Castle and the wide surroundings are a matter of course here, and the sunsets are unique. If we came by car, we can park by the pond that was used for settling the washed-out ash from the Žilina heating plant. The second alternative to get here is from the Žilina forest park Chrasť.

If you are from the Žilina area or are passing by and feel like escaping the city bustle for a while while also enjoying some light physical activity, this route will reward you with its ease and views of Malá Fatra that will let you completely switch off from thoughts of work or the rush of city life. The route starts at the Mausoleum of the Nyári family in Gbeľany, where there is also a car park. It will reward almost everyone, as whether in winter, spring, autumn, or summer, it always has something to offer. In winter it is suitable for hikers, and if there is enough snow at higher elevations, it also has many turnoffs and alternative trails suitable for cross-country skiers. From spring to autumn it is also suitable for cyclists.
The trail is 5.3 km long. It starts at an elevation of 370 m above sea level, and the final view of the Malá Fatra is at an elevation of 653 m above sea level. So we have approximately 280 meters of climbing ahead of us. We will walk along an old asphalt road that is no longer in the best condition, so especially on bicycles when descending, you need to watch out for numerous potholes in the road that could throw us off balance, but if we are careful, this path is very rideable on a mountain bike and is also suitable for younger hikers.

The city of Žilina offers in its immediate vicinity a multitude of locations suitable for active leisure time. One of them is a walk up Dubeň, which almost every Žilina resident knows. It is undemanding on physical fitness, accessible to all age groups, and offers views where we can see the whole city as if on the palm of our hand. An added value will also be the view of Malá Fatra. Dubeň is such a small Žilina ridge hike, and the tourist trail marking is also in red, as is usual for "ridge hikes". I decided to go by bike and start the route at the Žilina Water Works. In a short time I got to Teplička nad Váhom, from where we have to overcome a small elevation gain along an asphalt road to reach the level of Dubeň. However, we need to be careful, especially if our group includes children, because this "shortcut" is also often used by cyclists coming down the opposite direction, who like to release the brakes a bit to enjoy the feeling of speed. It is therefore safe to keep to the right side of the asphalt path.
Once we overcome this climb, we turn left onto the road leading from Žilina to Zástranie and continue onto a forest trail that lines Dubeň from start to finish. It is a trail with a gentle, undemanding ascent, which turns into a descent after reaching the highest point. Our path is surrounded by avenues of trees, which create different feelings in every season and in the diversity of weather. Approximately two-thirds of the way, there is a 27m high observation tower with a view of the wide surroundings.
